The courtin'

By James Russell Lowell. Boston: J.R. Osgood and company, 1874.

This first edition is one of James Russell Lowell's most popular humorous poems, telling the story of a shy country boy who tries to propose to his sweetheart, with heliotypes reproducing Winslow Homer’s drawings. The silhouettes by Homer are in the tradition of a late 19th century popular American folk art form that was often used for household decoration or keepsakes but rarely used for book illustration.
