The Courtin'
The courtin'
This first edition is one of James Russell Lowell's most popular humorous poems, telling the story of a shy country boy who tries to propose to his sweetheart, with heliotypes reproducing Winslow Homers drawings. The silhouettes by Homer are in the tradition of a late 19th century popular American folk art form that was often used for household decoration or keepsakes but rarely used for book illustration.
