The cyclopaedia: or, Universal dictionary of arts and sciences and literature... First American edition
Rescued by SIL staff on its way to a dumpster, this set of the American edition of Rees's classic encyclopedia, though incomplete (63 half-volumes [of 85?]), survives in its printed-paper boards with paper spine labels, as it was originally issued. All of the title pages for the set are in one of the final three volumes that were meant to be taken apart so that the individual title pages could be matched with the appropriate volumes of text (and the printed boards thrown away) by the bookbinder. This set was never bound, and its 63 (of an estimated 85) half-volumes remain as they were originally issued to purchasers — a most unusual survival.
The exteriors of the volumes show wear and tear, with 12 of the 63 volumes having loose or missing boards; there are areas of discoloration and foxing throughout the text-blocks. To preserve the original covers without alteration, conservators will measure each volume for a custom-fitted archival box to protect the books' materials and structures from further damage.
