Das Heidelberger Schloss und Seine Garten in Alter und Neuer Zeit, und der Schlossgarten zu Schwetzingen

This rare history and illustrated guide to two German Baroque gardens, the title of which translates to: The Heidelberg Castle and its Gardens in Old and New Times, and the Castle Garden to Schwetzingen, was written by Hermann Robert Jung. Jung was a landscape architect and horticultural director for the city of Cologne around 1890, designer of city parks, and an advocate for reforestation as well as the improvement, expansion, and redesign of existing gardens.  This book begins with a brief history of the Heidelberg Castle noting prominent residents and a series of reconstructions over a 700 year period. Particular attention is given to a description and illustration of the layout, waterways, grottos, mazes, arbors, terraces, flowerbeds, sculpture, and ornaments of the castle gardens deigned by Solomon de Caus between 1619-1619. The second part of the book focuses on the 18th century gardens at Schwetzingen Castle, located a short distance from Heidelberg. This late  ”courtly baroque” garden designed by J.L. Petri in 1753, inspired by English and French prototypes, features several allegorical statues, a central axis and a circular parterre. This guidebook documents two remarkable German achievements in baroque landscape design.
