An essay towards a system of mineralogy

An essay towards a system of mineralogy

By Axel Fredrik Cronstedt. London: Printed for Edward and Charles Dilly ..., 1770.

Cronstedt, a Swedish mineralogist, developed a new classification of minerals based on their chemical properties rather than their appearance, using the blowpipe for his chemical analyses. James Smithson, a gentleman-scientist and the Institution's founder, owned and annotated this copy of the English translation and became renowned for his expertise in the same analytical technique.

Condition and Treatment:

A contemporary full sprinkled calf binding.  The front board is coming loose, with three of the five sewing cords broken, and the leather of both the front and back boards is cracked at the joints. Reinforce the outer and inner hinges with Japanese paper to preserve the original binding.  Tone the outer hinge to match the leather of the original cover.
