Another work donated to the Smithsonian by the Duc de Loubat, who funded its publication, this tall folio volume is a chromo-photographic facsimile of the Codex Ríos, an Italian translation and augmentation of a Spanish colonial-era manuscript, the Codex Telleriano-Remensis, held in the Vatican's incomparable library. Compiled in the 1550s and '60s, the manuscript contains several almanacs and calendars, pictorial chronicles, and cosmological and mythological traditions of the Tolteca-Chichimeca culture in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico.
Stiff vellum binding with gold tooling. Minor damage to vellum covering on spine and corners. Surface dirt. Off-setting of ink in last section of book with general discoloration and foxing.Treatment: Dry-clean. Perform repair to torn vellum on spine. Create a drop-spine box.
