Salices americanae. North American willows.

by Joseph Barratt. Middletown, Conn., 1840.

An English-born physician who emigrated to the U.S. in his twenties, Barratt turned to botany and settled eventually in Middletown, Connecticut, to teach at Wesleyan University. The unusual format of this item — printed on one side of the sheets only — suggests that it may have been published for classroom display. The North American willows include Salix barrattiana (Barratt's willow), a species native to Alaska and the Yukon Territory that was named in his honor.

Condition and Treatment:

An un-bound bi-folia and single sheets loose in an acidic pamphlet binder. The pages are in disrepair with holes and large areas of loss.  Wash the pages in a de-ionized water bath and flatten.  Repair the areas of loss using Japanese paper and wheat starch paste.  Create a custom enclosure.
