The AA/PG Library received the donation of ephemera for more than 3,000 artists from the Art Students League of New York (ASL) in January 2017. Since its inception in 1875, the Art Students League of New York has been organized by students as a laissez-faire form of artistic education. In the environment fostered at the League, the mentorship of instructors greatly impacted thousands of students. This exhibition presents a glimpse of some of the instructors who helped ignite a century of incredible artistic production and experimentation.
Curated by Smithsonian Libraries & Katzenberger Internship award recipient Michelle Ibarra, we have selected some of the most interesting items related to teachers at the League, including Frank DuMond, Robert Beverly Hale, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Martha Bloom, and others.
The exhibition will be on view in the AA/PG Library Reading Room from August-December, 2017.
