Supplied Caption: "Published in ""Puck"" November 19, 1890. This cartoon correctly attributes the Republican defeat of 1890 to the effect of the McKinley tariff. The McKinley Bill resulted in the highest protective tariff in American history to that point with an average rate of 48 percent. The tariff led to a sharp rise in the prices of many products. The measure proved to be so unpopular that the Republicans were also defeated in the election of 1892."
