American Trade Literature Collection Data README and

The Smithsonian Libraries trade catalog collection is physically organized by company name and thus the database which serves as it's inventory is similarly based on company names. This database is only a rough inventory, it is not a catalog of all the holdings. There are approximately 36,500 records, each representing one company name - please note the list may have duplicate entries. Inventory is continually being revised.

FIELDS and THEIR CONTENTS

Fieldnames are NOT included in the content. They are all listed below in the order in which they appear in the data export. Some fields are legacy data and are/were for internal use only, or have no practical meaning.


	ID - Unique identifier (integer)
	
	Location - Location of physical collection. See "Abbreviations" below. (string)
	
	VarientCompanyName - If company does not have an authorized form of the name, it goes here. if it does have an authorized form, variants go here. (long text, clob)
	
	Related_companies - Subsidiaries, name changes (long text, clob)
	
	Language - "English", "German", "French", "Spanish", or "Other" (string)
	
	AuthorizedCompany - If the company has an authorized form of their name, (i.e., in VIAF) it goes here (string)
	
	Date_FX1 - If there is also a record in our library catalog for the company, and it had publication date ranges, the first date in the date range appears here. This only applies to about 6000 records in the database. (string)
	
	Date_FX2- Second date in the date range from the catalog record. (string)
	
	company_city - City (string)
	
	company_state - Mostly U.S. states using postal abbreviations but also includes Canadian provinces, and some European provinces/areas. Not authority controlled. (String)
	
	company_country - Not authority controlled. (string)
	
	notes_content - Notes (long text, clob)

	Form01TradeCatalog - Indicates item is a catalog (next 6 fields follow a similar pattern) (boolean)

	SizeRangePieces - Approximate nubmer of items in company. Items can be one sheet of paper or a 2000 pg manual. (integer)
	
	SizeRangeBoxes - # of boxes containing compnay items (integer)
	
	SizeRangeLinearFeet - Approximate number of linear feet of material (integer)
	
	romaine_sub - Romaine subject headings, comma delimited. Romaine was a guy who liked catalogs. He came up with a controlled vocabulary to describe them. Within each subejct heading, semi-colons are used instead of commas for obvious reasons.
	
	Typesofimages_bw - Indicates the item was printed in black & white (boolean)
	
	Typesofimages_color - Indicates the item was printed in color (boolean)
	
	lcsh_sub[01] - LCSH headings for company items, separated by | (pipe). Next 25 fields may contain a subject heading. (string)
